A professor and distinguished historian will discuss the idea of a Jewish State in a lecture at 7:30 p.m. Monday, February 22.
Michael Brenner will present “The Idea of a Jewish State from Herzl to Netanyahu” in the auditorium of the McClung Museum. The lecture is a part of the annual Karen and Pace Robinson Lecture Series on Modern Israel. It is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
Brenner’s presentation will explore the idea of a Jewish state from the founder of Zionism, Theodor Herzl, in the late nineteenth century, to Israel’s current prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu.
Brenner is a professor and historian at American University and professor of Jewish History and Culture at Ludwig-Maximilians in Munich, Germany. He is also the director of Israel studies at American University and the author of a number of books on Judaism.
He is the co-author of the four-volume German-Jewish History in Modern Times and the editor of seventeen books, among them a study of religion and state in Israel.
The event is sponsored by UT’s Fern and Manfred Steinfeld Program in Judaic Studies and co-sponsored by the Departments of History, Religious Studies, and Modern Foreign Languages and Literature.
