Christopher Allen, a senior in architecture, Lindha Guerrero, a junior in interdisciplinary programs, and Walter Williams, a sophomore in kinesiology, are three of approximately 800 American undergraduate students from 355 colleges and universities across the United States selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, to study or intern abroad during the spring 2016 academic term.

During the spring semester, Allen will participate in the UT Architecture Semester program in Krakow, Poland; Guerrero will participate in the Arabic Language and Middle Eastern Studies Semester in Amman, Jordan; and Williams will study at Kansai Gaidai University in Hirakata City, Japan.

This fall, four students were awarded the scholarship—Khadesia Howell, a senior in Hispanic studies, Andrea Richardson, a senior in anthropology, and Richard Berry and Christine Gidden, both juniors in interdisciplinary programs. Howell is participating in Health Care Courses in English and Medical Spanish in San Jose, Costa Rica; Richardson is studying at the Universidad Catalica del Uruguay in Motevideo, Uruguay; and Berry and Gidden are studying at the International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan.

Gilman scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their study abroad or internship program costs. Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages, and economies—making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector.
