Your orange clothing will work double duty this month as campus organizations host several Halloween-themed events for students, faculty, staff, and the community.
Mark your calendar for these events:
Trick or Trees, 1:00–3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 24, at UT Gardens. Children are invited to wear costumes and enjoy food-free trick or treating. The event is designed to allow those with food allergies to participate in safe seasonal food-free activities. The Food Allergy Community of East Tennessee, Allergy and Asthma Affiliates, and the Allergy Asthma and Sinus Center helped to create this event. Attendees will learn about natural science topics such as spiders, leaves, and pumpkins, and can make crafts to take home. Cost is $6 for each child under 12. Register online. Howl-O-Ween, 1:00–5:00 p.m. Sunday, October 25, at UT Gardens. The Howl-O-Ween Pooch Parade and Pet Expo caters to dogs and dog lovers. Awards will be presented in judged categories for scariest, funniest, prettiest, and best pop culture/character costumes. The event includes an expo of educational booths, pet businesses, and rescue groups. Food trucks will be on hand for people wanting to purchase food. Pantry for Feeding Pets, an organization that helps local pets and pet owners by providing food and treats, will be accepting donations of dog and cat food and treats. Preregistration cost is $8 for one dog or $13 for two or more dogs. Day-of registration is $10 for one dog or $15 for two or more dogs. Register for the Pooch Parade online. VOLoween, 6:30–8:00 p.m. Monday, October 26, at the Neyland-Thompson Center indoor practice field at the corner of Lake Loudoun Boulevard and Johnny Majors Drive. Faculty and staff are invited to bring their families to trick or treat and play games with student-athletes. VOLoween is hosted by UT Athletics. For more info, call 974-2795.
Trunk or Treat, 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, in Circle Park. The United Residence Hall Council and the National Residence Hall Honorary are hosting Trunk or Treat for faculty and staff families. For more info, call 974-2571.
Buggy Buffet, 3:30 p.m. Thursday, October 29, in Hollingsworth Auditorium in Ellington Plant Sciences. The event, free and open to the public, is hosted by students in the course in conjunction with the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology. Tentative menu offerings include an appetizer of ants-on-a-log (celery with pimento cheese topped with ants), followed by an entrée of Special K-ricket casserole, waxworm wontons and mealworm meatballs. The meal will conclude with a dessert of chocolate chirp cookies and assorted chocolate covered insects. A silent auction will be held, and insect-themed items and artwork will be available to purchase.
Day of the Dead celebration, noon–5:00 p.m. Friday, October 30, on Hodges Library first floor. Visitors can vote for their favorite student-created ofrenda (altar honoring the deceased). E-mail rtoledo@utk.edu for more information.
Pumpkin Drop 2015, 3:30–5:00 p.m. Friday, October 30, Humanities and Social Sciences Building lawn (on the side closest to Circle Park). The event will feature science demos starting at 3:30 p.m. and pumpkins will start falling at 4:30 p.m. Hosted by UT’s Society of Physics Students.
Second Annual Halloween Extravaganza hosted by the UT Baseball Team, 4:30 p.m., Friday, October 30, in Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Full-costume team scrimmage and trick-or-treating with the Vols. Free admission.
HalloQueen Drag Show, 7:00 to 10:30 p.m. Friday, October 30. A student-run drag show featuring the talents of the UT community, sponsored by VolOUT. Cost is $2. For more info, e-mail volout@utk.edu.
