The campus community is invited to a discussion about the value of the humanities at public universities Wednesday, November 4.
David Schaberg, dean of humanities at the University of California Los Angeles, will talk about the place of the humanities at state universities. He will also address some of the new pedagogical plans at UCLA and how they relate to graduates’ prospects for personal and professional success.
The event begins at 3:30 p.m. in the Great Room of the International House. The Department of History is hosting the talk.
Schaberg is a professor in Asian languages and cultures at UCLA. He also is past chair of Asian languages and cultures and co-director of the Center for Chinese Studies. He has published articles on early Chinese literature, historiography, and philosophy as well as Greek/Chinese comparative issues. He is the author of A Patterned Past: Form and Thought in Early Chinese Historiography, which was awarded the 2003 Levenson Prize for Books in Chinese Studies, Pre-1900 category. His more recent work addresses the history of oratory and ritual speech genres in early China.
