Stents used to help clear blocked arteries could soon be clearer themselves, according to UT associate professor Wei He.

He, who works in materials science, partnered with researchers at Dalian University of Technology in China to develop what are known as bulk metallic glass (BMG) stents.

According to Materials Today, He’s research has shown her that such glass-based stents could last much longer than the stainless steel ones currently in use, being able to withstand their use without corrosion to a better degree.

He told the magazine that, “Our findings demonstrate several advantages of Zr-BMG for vascular stent applications.”
