As part of the university’s successful Carnegie Community Engagement Classification application process, the Office of Research and Engagement has compiled a list of fifty of UT’s best community-campus partnerships. The university will be celebrating its status as an engaged institution throughout the year by featuring these individual examples in articles that highlight their unique contribution to the community.

Pre-College Summer Program in Engineering

partnerships-TNTThe Pre-College Summer Program in Engineering provides a series of five, one-week residential programs designed to introduce middle- and high-school students to engineering. The program’s mission is to provide early exposure to and preparation for scientific study and research for students who show an interest in engineering studies. Thirty-two students are selected to participate for each session. Hands-on activities spark an interest in the world of engineering and allow students to explore career opportunities. Throughout the program, participants are challenged to apply what they have learned in engineering competitions. The program has been in operation since 1997, with an annual involvement of approximately fourteen faculty members and 160 middle- and high-school students.

For Travis Griffin, Director of Engineering Diversity Programs, making a difference means “starting a new trend of events. You never know if the next engineer walking into your lab is going to make an impact on medicine or innovation.”
