Two UT seniors are packing their bags for a year of study abroad, thanks to the Whitaker International Program.
The Whitaker International Program sends US students in biomedical engineering abroad to work on self-designed projects that will enhance their careers in the field. The program strives to develop professional leaders who not only are superb scientists, but also will advance the profession through an international outlook.
This year’s Whitaker Scholars are:
- Chris Ludtka, a Haslam Scholar senior in engineering, who will spend the next year studying in Germany;
- David Morse, a senior in the College Scholars program, who will spend the next year studying in Cambridge.
Ludtka, of Oak Ridge, is majoring in chemical engineering with a biomolecular concentration. This past summer, he interned at the Fraunhofer Institut für Werkstoffmechanik in Halle, Germany, conducting medical research. He investigated degradation of cartilage in the human spine.
After the Whitaker Fellowship, Ludtka plans to attend medical school either in the United States or Germany.
Morse, of Knoxville, is majoring in bioengineering and nanotechnology through UT’s College Scholars program. He was also a national finalist for the Fulbright Partner Award to Cambridge. Morse will study for a one-year Master of Philosophy in engineering at the University of Cambridge Nanoscience Centre, where he will work on the tailoring of gold nanoparticles for cancer therapy.
