Timothy L. Hulsey, associate provost and director of University Honors, has been elected president of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.
“I am deeply honored to serve as president of Phi Kappa Phi,” said Hulsey. “I cannot imagine a greater privilege than leading a society of such learned and accomplished women and men. We have arrived at an important moment in the history of our society and I believe we are poised to do great things.”
Hulsey’s election represents a four-year leadership commitment—two years as president and then two years as past president.
Hulsey has been an active leader of Phi Kappa Phi at the local, regional, and national levels. He has served as president of the Virginia Commonwealth University chapter, vice president for chapter relations, and regional representative for Phi Kappa Phi’s Northeast Region. Most recently, he chaired the Chapter Criteria Task Force.
Hulsey received his doctorate in clinical psychology from UT in 1991. He was founding dean of the Honors College at Virginia Commonwealth University, a position he held for six years. Prior to that, he directed VCU’s honors program. Hulsey also directed the honors program at Texas State University.
Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi annually inducts about 32,000 students, faculty, professional staff, and alumni. The Society has chapters on more than 300 colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines. Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction also qualify.
