Museum lovers, families, and other community members are invited to explore and enjoy a variety of free exhibit-related events this month at UT’s McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture.
The activities are planned in connection with the temporary exhibit “The Collector’s Eye: American and European Art from the McClung Museum,” which explores paintings, works on paper, and sculptures from the museum’s permanent collections.
The events kick off Saturday, August 2, with a Family Fun Day showcasing landscape paintings from “The Collector’s Eye.” The 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. event will take place in the exhibit gallery and the museum’s lobby. It will include hands-on tours of the exhibit, educational activities, and an exhibit-inspired craft to take home. All materials will be provided. The program is free and open to the public. Reservations are not necessary.
- Monday, August 11
Parents and caregivers with babies or children up to four years old are invited to attend a free stroller tour on Monday, August 11. The 10:00–11:00 a.m. event will focus on the “Collector’s Eye” exhibit.
Participants will meet in the museum’s lobby before taking a tour of the exhibit gallery. The event is part of a monthly series of free stroller tours that allow parents and caregivers to interact with one another and museum staff without the worry of disrupting other visitors. The program is free and open to the public, but reservations are necessary and are first come, first serve. Online registration is preferred, and is available online. Participants also may call the museum at 865-974-2144 to make a reservation.
- Thursday, August 21
The museum’s free lunchtime art short film series, Talking Pictures, will continue at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, August 21. The museum will present a short film on James McNeill Whistler—a famous British artist featured in “The Collector’s Eye.”
“The Collector’s Eye” will run through August 24. More information about the exhibit may be found online. The exhibit is curated by Catherine Shteynberg and presented by Bennett Galleries and WUOT. Additional support is provided by Knox County, the City of Knoxville, and the Arts and Heritage Fund.
The McClung Museum is located at 1327 Circle Park Drive. It is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free.
On weekends, free parking is available on Circle Park Drive on a first-come, first-serve basis. Additional parking information is available online.
