A 1960s science laboratory will serve as the setting for the Opera Theatre’s adaptation of Mozart’s Cosí Fan Tutte, an opera about the faithfulness of women.
The spring opera will be presented Thursday, April 10, Saturday, April 12, and Sunday, April 13, at the Carousel Theatre, 1714 Andy Holt Avenue. It features main character Don Alfonso, who tests the faithfulness of two sets of lovers by doing experiments on them.
The opera is under the direction of James Marvel, Opera Theatre director, and conducted by Kevin Class, Opera Theatre music director.
“The aesthetic is something like Austin Powers meets Young Frankenstein,” Marvel said. “Cosí Fan Tutte is one of Mozart’s most popular operas. It is a wonderful comedy that features a top-notch design team from New York.”
Video designer S. Katy Tucker, who has worked with UT on previous operas, made her Metropolitan Opera debut this season on their production of Prince Igor. Cosí will be set designer Blair Mielnik’s first project with the UT Opera Theatre.
The cast consists of undergraduate and graduate students in the UT School of Music.
Show times are Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday at 8:00 p.m., with a matinee performance at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $5 for students, $15 for seniors, and $20 for adults.
