Scott Poole, dean of UT’s College of Architecture and Design, has been named one of the thirty Most Admired Educators of 2014 by DesignIntelligence, a report published by the Design Futures Council.
DesignIntelligence is noted as the most important and respected poll in the country for the design disciplines. Its rankings are equivalent to those of the U.S. News and World Report or the Princeton Review grading systems, which do not evaluate design programs.
The annual honor is given to leading design professionals who demonstrate excellence as administrators and educators. This is Poole’s second time receiving the accolade, which is vetted by DesignIntelligence staff with extensive input from thousands of design professionals, academic department heads, and students from across the fields of architecture, interior design, industrial design, and landscape architecture.
Poole is cited for his open-minded and visionary approach to teaching and leadership, and is noted for his “passion for development of pedagogy to support and engage rapid transformation in the profession.”
Poole joined UT in July 2011 after serving as the director of the School of Architecture and Design at Virginia Tech. He received a bachelor’s degree from Temple University, where he was part of the honors anthropology program and an All-American athlete. He earned a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Texas and was a student Fulbright Scholar.
Since becoming dean of the College of Architecture and Design, Poole has transformed its teaching, facilities, and research. He has extended research collaboration through a partnership with the Environmental Sciences Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Through this division, the college will soon appoint a new Governor’s Chair, a research team that will focus on energy performance and environmentally responsible design for buildings and communities.
