The Howard Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy will celebrate its tenth anniversary with an exhibit and reception in the center’s rotunda tomorrow, September 4.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Baker Center Director Matt Murray will speak briefly at 5:00 p.m. Sen. Baker is expected to attend.
“Senator Baker, who turns 88 on November 15, loves his university, his state, and his country. It was his desire to create a place at UT where students, faculty, and the community could learn about public policy issues and contribute constructively to the national discussion,” Murray said. “As the Baker Center has grown and evolved, Senator Baker has been at our side, sharing his knowledge and experience, and encouraging other national and international policymakers to visit the center.
An exhibit in the rotunda will chronicle the Baker Center’s work.
“In recognition of the support from Senator Baker, our board, private donors, and the university, we are proud to display and share highlights of our first ten years of service. This is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the fond memories and memorabilia of the past and clarify our sights for the future,” Murray said.
Established in 2003, the Baker Center seeks to further the public’s knowledge of the US government and public policy and to encourage civil leadership and public service. The center sponsors programs to encourage informed discussion, with a special focus on engaging young people in policy issues and public service.
