Marian Roman, an associate professor of nursing at UT has been honored for her work in aiding people with mental illness in the Knoxville community.
She is the recipient of the 2013 Award for Innovation from the American Psychiatric Nursing Association (APNA). The APNA Annual Awards recognize nurses who exemplify excellence across the spectrum of psychiatric–mental health nursing practice, education, leadership, research, and innovation.
Roman will receive her award at the APNA annual conference this October in San Antonio, Texas.
“Marian’s tireless dedication to service has had an enormous impact on the Knoxville community” said Victoria Niederhauser, dean of the College of Nursing. “Her work and passion makes her most deserving on this award.”
Roman’s innovations have been in educational methods and service. She was instrumental in the design of “LaunchPoint,” a comprehensive, multi-week life recovery program for homeless people in Knoxville at Knox Area Rescue Ministries. The program began in Jan 2012 and has had a success rate more than 70 percent of graduates not returning to homelessness after a year.
Roman is among seven psychiatric-mental health nurses nationwide to be recognized for their commitment to excellence in specific aspects of psychiatric-mental health nursing. An APNA Annual Award is one of the highest forms of recognition from psychiatric–mental health nursing peers. The awards recipients were nominated by colleagues and chosen by a committee of fellow APNA members.
