The School of Music will partner with a local theater group to present a summer production of South Pacific beginning June 7.
The musical will run through June 23 at the UT Carousel Theatre.
This marks the tenth annual collaboration between the School of Music and the Tennessee Valley Players.
The award-winning South Pacific musical is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book Tales of the South Pacific by James A. Michener. It is set on an island paradise during World War II and tells two parallel love stories against the dangers of prejudice and war. The musical showcases the importance of valuing diversity.
The score contains many of the most recognizable songs in Broadway, including “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out-a My Hair,” “I’m In Love With a Wonderful Guy” and “There Is Nothing Like a Dame.”
The musical will feature community members, experienced actors, and a mix of UT alumni, current students, and faculty. Angela Batey, associate director of the UT School of Music and director of choral activities, will be the show’s musical director. The stage director is Edmund Bolt, a UT alumnus.
The production will take place on June 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23. Friday and Saturday shows will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees will begin at 3:00 pm. Tickets are available at the door. The price is $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for children twelve and younger. UT faculty and staff will receive a discount on ticket prices. There will be no assigned seating.
