The Center for Leadership and Service has a big idea for recognizing UT graduates for their community service: the Service Medallion.
The Center for Leadership and Service was created as a department in the Division of Student Life in 2012 in response to student feedback calling for an increased focus on the values and practice of leadership and service. The center brings together leadership development programs and service programs that formerly were part of TeamVOLS/Student Activities and Student Orientation and Leadership Development. The Center’s mission is to educate and engage all students to lead and serve in the global community, and currently reaches thousands of students through their classes, programs, student leaders, and available resources.
Students can use the center to help them find service opportunities in the community and to log their service hours. Students who perform 100 or more hours of community service during their time at UT earn a medallion to wear at commencement.
Although one December graduate earned a medallion, this May is the medallion’s big debut. Six graduates will be wearing them. Those graduates are Emily Akers, Kerry Memory, Melissa Eggert, Allison Ruff, Kevin Woods, and Ann Glandorf.
Center director Sally Parish said students have responded to the call for service. In the past year, since the center began, students have logged more than 10,952 community service hours.
