Kurt Sickafus

A UT-based team has received a $3.5 million grant from US Department of Energy for a proposal to improve the currently used nuclear fuel cladding. Kurt Sickafus, head of the Department of Material Science and Engineering, will lead a team of eleven international institutions to engineer ceramic coatings that will prohibit the oxidation of nuclear fuel cladding. Cladding refers to the metallic tube that protects the fuel in a nuclear reactor from the surrounding coolant such as water.
