Baker CenterHigh school and college students are invited to express their opinions—and maybe win some cash—in a Constitution Day essay contest sponsored by the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

High school freshmen to seniors in college are encouraged to submit essays of 500 words or less in response to Senator Howard H. Baker Jr.’s quote, “I’m ready to wager my life’s meaning that what America will be remembered for in the centuries to come is the staggering achievement of taking different people from all over the world and building a great civilization.”

Students may agree, disagree, provide examples, propose an alternative viewpoint, expand upon this thought, or relate the quote in some way to the United States Constitution.

Winners will be chosen in the high school category and the college category. The first prize winners of the contest will receive $250, and the second prize winners will receive $150.

Essays should be submitted to bakeressaycontest@gmail.com by 11:59 p.m., September 10. Winners will be announced September 17. For a complete list of rules, visit the Baker Center website.
