A group of students from the School of Art has designed and built an obelisk that is now part of the new lion and baboon exhibits that opened recently at the Knoxville Zoo.

The permanent sculpture is nineteen feet tall and weighs about 10,000 pounds.

The students were enrolled in the Special Topic in Sculpture course this summer, taught by Patricia Tinajero, an assistant professor in the School of Art.

“The project is relevant, given that the zoo receives approximately 400,000 visitors each year, making this site a prime location for viewing and engaging with public art,” Tinajero said.

The project was a collaborative effort made possible through a partnership with the Knoxville Zoo.
