KNOXVILLE—The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Department of Religious Studies is co-sponsoring a one-day workshop on Islam on Saturday, April 14.
The workshop, “Teaching and Learning about Islam: Pedagogies and Perspectives,” will be held at the Sarah Simpson Professional Development/Technology Center, 801 Tipton Ave. Attendance is free, but registration is required.
UT’s co-sponsor for the workshop is Georgetown University’s Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.
The workshop is designed to give East Tennessee educators, and especially high school teachers, the tools they need to raise awareness about the beliefs, culture, and history of Islam, and its interactions with diverse societies over time.
Workshop topics include:
- Building a Comfort Zone: Constitutional Guidelines for Teaching about Religion in Public Schools;
- Arts of the Renaissance: Islamic Influence in Ceramics, Carpets, Glass, and Metalwork;
- Islam in the Media: Supporting Critical Thinking;
- Trade, Travel, and the Spread of Ideas and Technologies.
Registration for the conference is open until April 10, or until all fifty available spaces have been filled. Refreshments and lunch will be served. For more information or to register, call 974-2466.
