Graduate student Steven Stothard has been named the 2012 Social Work Student of the Year by the Tennessee chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
Stothard, who is pursuing a master’s degree in the College of Social Work, was recognized for his influence on classmates while also maintaining a 4.0 GPA in his last semester before graduation.
He has worked to increase participation of students in the college and has started a mentoring program for first-year students.
Stothard, through his work with Students for Social Justice, spearheaded a conference at UT called “OUTstanding: a Seminar Exploring LBGTIQ Diversity.” He wrote grants to secure funding for the event and ensured that it coincided with the university’s vision to nurture diversity.
