KNOXVILLE—The University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s search for a vice chancellor for research continues this week, with a visit from the fifth and final candidate and a public forum.
H. Edward Seidel, physics and astronomy and computer science professor at Louisiana State University, and assistant director for mathematical and physical sciences at the National Science Foundation, will speak from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, October 19, in the Toyota Auditorium in the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy.
Seidel has worked at LSU since 2003 and the NSF since 2008. From 2003 to 2008, Seidel was the founding director of the LSU Center for Computation and Technology, a university-wide interdisciplinary academic and research unit. He also served as the first chief scientist for the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative, a fiber optics network which connects the state’s six research universities and two medical centers. From 1995 to 1996, Seidel served as the professor and head of numerical relativity and eScience research groups at the Albert Einstein Institute in Potsdam, Germany. Before that, Seidel was an associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Illinois.
Seidel has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics from the College of William and Mary, a master’s degree in physics from the University of Pennsylvania, and a doctorate in relativistic astrophysics from Yale University.
Four other candidates for this position have already visited campus and held public forums. They include Timothy Killeen, Lyall Research Professor at the University of Colorado and assistant director for geosciences at the National Science Foundation; Michael Pazzani, vice president for research and graduate professional education at Rutgers University; David Norton, associate dean for research and graduate programs for the College of Engineering at the University of Florida; and Robert Scott, associate vice president for research at the University of Georgia.
