Jack Dongarra, distinguished professor of electrical engineering and computer science, was interviewed by the BBC about the Japanese supercomputer called K. The K was recently crowned as the world’s most powerful computer in the latest edition of the Top500, a six-monthly round up of the world’s fastest number crunchers. Dongarra puts together the much anticipated biannual Top500 list. In the interview, he describes K as have the processing power of one million home computers. He says the K has the speed and fidelity to solve the world’s biggest problems. The K is used for modeling climate, earthquake simulation, nuclear research, etc.
