KNOXVILLE – The school year is almost over, and summer is right around the corner. Worried about keeping your kids busy? Take a look at the many educational, active and interesting camps for all ages that UT Knoxville has to offer.

Summer camps, ranging from athletics to the arts, are fun and educational and provide kids with a safe environment to express their creativity and talents.

Here is the full list of camps for children to enjoy at UT.

4-H Camps:

4-H Electric Camp (June 28-July 1)

  • Grades: 6-7 (as of Jan. 1, 2011)
  • Location: UT Knoxville
  • Cost: $185
  • Fee includes the cost of meals, lodging, field trips, insurance, program, etc. Transportation fees are covered by members of the Tennessee Electric Cooperative Association.

4-H Target Smart Camp (July 5-8)

  • Grades: 5-12
  • Location: W.P. Ridley 4-H Center, Columbia, Tenn.
  • Cost: $205
  • Transportation is the responsibility of individual participants.
  • Camp youth learn skills to succeed in a variety of shooting sports, such as archery, riflery, shotgun use and outdoor skills.

4-H also offers a Junior 4-H Camp for grades 4-6. The five-day resident camp includes swimming, golfing, music, group sports and hiking. The 4-H Adventure Camp, for grades 6-8, is for selected 4-H centers and offers activities like mock archaeological digs, fishing, tubing, nature hikes, canoeing, swimming and survivor challenges. Architecture and Design Design Matters Camp (July 10-16) — A camp that provides the opportunity to experience life as a design student on a university campus for one week. Previous architecture or design experience is not necessary.

  • Grades: 9-12
  • Cost: $985
  • Registration deadline: May 1

Cost includes materials, equipment and computers, on-campus housing and meal tickets to campus dining, field trip admission tickets, transportation to and from off-campus sites, and walking tours of downtown Knoxville and the campus. Full and partial camp scholarships are available.

Business Education for Talented Students (BETS) Program (June 10-18) – A program designed to expose under-represented students to all aspects of the business world and to encourage them to seek careers in business.

  • Grade: Current high school juniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Cost: Free to accepted students
  • Location: UT Knoxville (Students will live on campus for the week.)

Early Learning Center camps – Nine camps with stimulating and enriching content in varying areas of interest to children preparing to enter grades 1 through 4.

All camps are for grades 1-4 and last from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Drop off begins daily at 7:30 a.m. and pick up ends by 5:30 p.m. The camps take place at the Early Learning Center, 1206 White Avenue on the UT Knoxville campus. Cost is $185 per week with a $50 nonrefundable registration fee that does not count towards the overall cost of camp, but does include a camp T-shirt. Howard Baker Center Summer Scholars Experience (June 6-10) — A one-week opportunity to understand how the political system works and ways you can impact the community through public policy.

  • Grades: rising high school juniors or rising seniors. Students preparing to enroll in college for the fall term should not apply.
  • Opening session is at 9 a.m., June 6 — one overnight stay on campus
  • June 7 -10 — 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily.
  • Location: The Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy on the UT Knoxville campus, 1640 Cumberland Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37996
  • Cost: $20 to help cover associated costs.

All participants receive a T-shirt, lunch each day, all meals associated with the overnight stay and campus accommodations. Scholarships are available. All students selected to participate in the summer scholars program will be permitted, regardless of ability to pay. If the registration fee presents a barrier to your involvement, please include that information in your application.

McClung Museum camps:

Archaeokids: Exploring Ancient Art & Archaeology — A variety of fun activities focusing on archaeology and the arts of ancient people, especially ancient Native Americans of Tennessee and ancient Egyptians. All materials, snack provided.

Theater Acting Workshop — An intensive acting workshop for high school students designed to give young actors training in several different skills including basic acting technique, improvisation, voice, movement and musical theater techniques.

Satellite Camp — For high school teams requiring a 12-player minimum. Each session is five hours.

  • Two-day: Four-session Camp: $110/camper
  • Three-day: Six-session Camp: $150/camper

  • For swimmers that can do swim workouts of 3,000 yards or more.

Diving Clinics

  • Age: boys and girls age 8 and older, including high school and college divers
  • Session 1: June 12-17; session 2: June 19-24; session 3: June 26-July 1
  • Cost: overnight camp: $575 per session; commuter camp: $450 per session
  • A $150 deposit is due at the time of registration.

There will be a $125 fee for campers who stay the weekend between two consecutive sessions. Each camp will consist of five days of intensive training with each day including two training sessions per day. Each session will include dry and wet training programs. Sessions also will include extensive stretching, conditioning, and spotting programs each. Transportation Academy — A week-long adventure for middle school girls where they will discover and explore the multifaceted world of how we move from place to place through exciting and fun activities.

  • Grades: 7-8, rising (females only)
  • Location: UT Conference Center
  • Cost: Free

Activities include a UT driving simulator test drive, examining debris from a car wreck to solving the mystery of how it happened, a behind‐the‐scenes tour of McGhee‐Tyson Airport, crashing remote control cars and evaluating the damage and building freight delivery vehicles. Students will need to be dropped off and picked up at the UT Conference Center building each day. Transportation, food and supplies are included. Space is limited to 16 girls, and a teacher recommendation will be required.
