Paul GilesThe UT Knoxville Department of English is hosting a lecture by Paul Giles of the University of Sydney, Australia, at 3:30 p.m. today in 1210 McClung Tower.

Giles, the Challis Chair of English at the University of Sydney, will present a lecture titled “Transatlantic/Transpacific: Herman Melville and ‘The Other Side of the Sphere.'” The event is free and open to the public.

Formerly of Oxford University, Giles has published several books that are foundational to the field of transatlantic studies, including “Atlantic Republic: The American Tradition in English Literature,” “Virtual Americas: Transnational Fictions and the Transatlantic Imaginary” and “Transatlantic Insurrections: British Culture and the Formation of American Literature, 1730-1860.”

Since moving to Australia, Giles’ research has focused on helping to define the newly emerging field of transpacific studies.

Today’s presentation is the second in the Department of English’s “Literary Geographies” literature lecture series.
