KNOXVILLE — Nearly 150 employers will set up shop in Thompson-Boling Arena from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 30, for the Fall Job Fair sponsored by the Career Services office at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
UT Career Services hosts the Fall Job Fair each year to give soon-to-be graduates the opportunity to meet representatives from corporate employers, government agencies and non-profit organizations recruiting students for full-time, entry-level positions or internships. The event is open only to current UT students.
The federal government will be particularly well represented at the fair as government agencies will make up about 33 percent of all employers. The overall number of recruiters attending this year’s event is slightly down from last year.
Russ Coughenour, director of UT Career Services, says this reduced number reflects the economic downturn and job recession of the last 12 to 18 months. He says the good news for UT students is that the employers attending the fair have opportunities and are in a hiring mode.
“Job fairs are an excellent, convenient way for UT students to connect with dozens of high-quality employers all in the span of a few hours so it is very convenient,” Coughenour said. “Fairs like this one also are the best way for students to show off their interpersonal communications skills. Some candidates are simply better in person than on paper.”
The annual Fall Job Fair is only one of seven such on-campus opportunities for UT students to connect with potential employers, including the Spring Job Fair and the popular Summer Job and Intern Fair. Career Services also offers résumé critiques and sessions on successful interviewing, as well as job search-related workshops throughout the year. A “How to Work a Job Fair” session was offered last week to students interested in getting the most out of the university’s largest recruiting event of the year.
