A new sculpture will soon call its home the Johnson-Ward Pedestrian Mall on the UT Knoxville campus. The sculpture, called “A Startling Whirlwind of Opportunity,” by noted American sculptor Alice Aycock, will arrive on campus sometime next week. In preparation of its arrival, a special sign is now on display announcing the anticipated installation.
The sign was the focus of art professor Cary Staples’ graphic design course taught during the first summer session. Student Lauren Mackey’s design has been produced and installed on site with the help of Mike Sherrell, executive director for Facilities Services; Ted Murphy, superintendent of grounds; Tracy Williams, maintenance specialist for the Art + Architecture Building; and Debbie Cooper, administrative specialist in the School of Art.
The 30-foot tall swirling, spiral form, which consists of curved aluminum and neon-lighting elements, is a gift to the university from the Hill family of Memphis. Alumnus Wilton “Chick” Hill was not an art student while at UT but has cultivated a love of art throughout his adult life. He wanted to share this passion for art current UT students, faculty and employees. Aycock’s aluminum sculpture was selected in 2002 as the result of an international competition.
