Rickey Fayne Jr., a junior in the English department, has been accepted to participate in the Summer Institute for Literary and Cultural Studies (SILCS) this summer. Fayne will spend June 1-28 with eleven other highly-motivated English majors at SILCS, based at Wheaton College, in Norton, Massachusetts. The students, selected from a very competitive national pool, will study literary and cultural theory, will visit Harvard, Yale, and other New England graduate English programs, and will learn from a number of top scholars in the field who will serve as visiting lecturers for the institute. SILCS aims to increase diversity in the field of English studies by preparing students to apply to doctoral programs in English. Fayne’s sponsor at UT Knoxville is LaVinia Jennings.

Erin O’Brien, a graduating senior in French, was recently chosen by the Alliance Française of Nashville to be a teaching intern in Deauville, France, for the academic year 2009-2010. Erin will receive a salary and free housing for the year while she teaches English to French elementary school students.

Fritz G. Polite of Exercise, Sport and Leisure Studies, has been selected to present at a Global Sport Conference at the University De Oveido in Gijon, Spain. The conference theme is “Social Responsibility and Sustainability in Sports.” Polite’s presentation is on “Social Responsibility and Accountability in Sport.” Eleven scholars from around the globe will also present papers at the conference.
