Dear Fellow Students,

I hope that you will join me tomorrow, April 16, to hear from UT Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek about the university’s budget and the impact of the stimulus.

The one-hour session is at noon at the Black Cultural Center and will begin with an overview of our budget challenges, including some new information about the federal stimulus.

You will have plenty of time to ask questions.

Chancellor Cheek’s goal is to minimize the impact on students by dedicating stimulus funds for instruction to maintain the campus’s teaching capacity so that we can get the courses we need to graduate.
The campus can also preserve jobs and maintain key support services for us.

It is important to note that this one-time allocation must be spent over two years. We must, therefore, continue to prepare for a $25.6 million reduction in fiscal year 2012, which will begin July 1, 2011.

In the next few months, the legislature will finalize UT’s appropriation, and the UT Board of Trustees will consider the proposed 2010 budget.

I encourage you to come share your thoughts and concerns and also learn more about the work ahead.

Coffee, tea, water, and snacks will be provided, and you are free to bring your own lunch.
