The Kurt Weill Foundation for Music has awarded the UT Opera Theatre a grant for $8,000 to support the fall production of Weill’s "Street Scene." This is the largest performance grant the foundation has given to a university program.

"Street Scene," composed by Weill, has lyrics by Langston Hughes. UT Opera Theatre will present four performances in November at the Bijou Theatre.

The production features one of the largest casts ever assembled for UT Opera Theatre. "Street Scene" is directed by Carroll Freeman and conducted by James Fellenbaum. Scenery for "Street Scene" comes from the Des Moines Metro Opera, and Dewayne Kirschner of the Oak Ridge Playhouse designed the costumes.

The plot of "Street Scene" revolves around a tragic day in the lives of the Maurrant family and their New York City street neighbors during a hot summer in the 1940s.

The performances are 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16. For more info call 974-6011.
