KNOXVILLE — Students preparing to study abroad can find more help than ever, thanks to several new scholarships at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Proposed by the Student Government Association and approved by the Board of Trustees in June, a new $10 per year international education fee for all undergraduates started this fall. The fee will provide additional monies for the Center for International Education (CIE) Study Abroad Scholarships.

That fee, coupled with existing funds, will provide about $300,000 per year for CIE-administered scholarships that are awarded each semester based on a combination of financial need and academic merit. Award amounts are as follows: $500 for mini-term, spring break and summer programs, and $1,000 for semester and academic year programs.

Additional information, eligibility requirements, application instructions and deadlines are available at http://www.utabroad.org.

Separately, students who are enrolled in the Chancellor’s Honors program can apply for a new honors scholarship. Starting this fall, all Chancellor’s Honors students will be required to study abroad, major or minor in a foreign language, or complete an approved intercultural learning experience. About $100,000 has been dedicated to the scholarship fund, and students will be eligible for grants up to $3,000. Award decisions will be made by a faculty committee.

Deadline for this scholarship program is Oct. 15. To apply, go to http://honors.utk.edu/current/internationalgrant/internationalgrant.html.
