Terrell StrayhornTerrell Lamont Strayhorn, assistant professor of higher education and special assistant to the provost, has been appointed to the national research advisory committee for the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) within the United Negro College Fund.

The mission of the TMCF is "to be the premier organization in black higher education that develops and prepares a new generation of leaders by providing resources, opportunities and advocacy to public historically black colleges and universities, students and alumni."

Strayhorn will be part of a team comprised of leading experts on historically black colleges and black education in America that will help lead the research activities of TMCF, coordinate external grant competitions, evaluate the quality of fund-related research projects and publications, and advise the fund’s executive director, Dwayne Ashley, on matters of research, assessment and evaluation.

According to the TMCF Web site, "the highly accomplished committee is comprised of seasoned research scholars with demonstrated leadership in the field of academia, each an authority in his or her field."

Strayhorn, who joined the UTK faculty in 2005, is a professor in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences. In addition, he serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Sociology within the College of Arts and Sciences.

A nationally recognized expert on student retention, minorities in higher education, assessment and quantitative analysis, Strayhorn earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia, master’s degree from the Curry School of Education at UVA, and doctorate from Virginia Tech.
