KNOXVILLE –- After researching more than 3,000 Tennessee companies and finding a need for educational offerings in strategic-level organizational management, the University of Tennessee’s College of Business Administration has introduced the new UT Executive Development Certificate.
This non-degree program — offered by the Center for Executive Education (CEE) — combines new courses developed from customer feedback and courses already in CEE’s portfolio. It is designed for employees moving into management, group leaders moving into larger departmental responsibilities or department heads transitioning into broader executive roles.
Students earn the UT Executive Development Certificate by completing five non-degree short courses in strategic leadership, financial management, human resources, supply chain management, lean and process improvement, global business strategies and personal development. There is no time limit for completing the certificate curriculum.
“What makes this certificate program so unique and valuable for participants is that the content is customized to meet their individual goals and objectives,” said Kim Mallory, program director. “This is the first time since the center was created in 1972 that we have been able to offer such a personalized, cross-functional weaving of offerings.”
Earning the certificate involves completing courses in three modules: (1) Establishing Your Leadership Core; (2) Strengthening Your Leadership Foundation; and (3) Complementing Your Cross-Functional Business Base.
The first module consists of the cornerstone course, “Strategies for Effective Leadership: Solutions to Today’s Top Leadership Challenges.” This newly developed one-week course focuses on understanding yourself as a leader, those whom you lead and how to best impact your organization. The course curriculum includes a 360 assessment, various behavioral assessments, tools for effective negotiation and communication, and tools for understanding one’s leadership legacy. The next offering is June 2008.
Students then choose one of several courses offered within module two. These courses are designed to build on the leadership core and to enhance leadership skills within the student’s desired area of expertise. Topics range from leading in a technical environment to applying lean concepts to a health care setting to implementing global business strategies.
From the third module, participants choose three courses designed to complement their current business discipline, including “Supply Chain Management Strategy” “Logistics and Operations in the Supply Chain,” and the newly developed course “Finance for Non-Financial Managers.”
