KNOXVILLE — “Child Sex Slavery: A Domestic Phenomenon” will be the topic of a lecture on April 9 at the College of Law on the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, campus.
Maria Jose Fletcher, supervising attorney and director of the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center, will speak at 12:15 p.m. in Room 136.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is being sponsored by the College of Law’s Child Law Society.
Fletcher represented the women and children whose testimony was instrumental in convincing the U.S. Congress to pass the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000. She is a founding member of the Freedom Network (USA) to Empower Trafficked and Enslaved Persons and an advisory board member of the National Network to End Violence Against Immigrant Women. She has a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of South Florida and a law degree from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale. Fletcher has spoken nationally and internationally on the themes of immigration, domestic violence, human trafficking and advocacy.
