KNOXVILLE –- Linda Beets, an administrative assistant in Large Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, is the fall semester winner in the “Where in the World is Smokey?” challenge.
Fall 2007 Smokey contest winner Linda BeetsBeets was chosen in a drawing of everyone who submitted photos or videos used on the Ready for the World Web site. Her prize was an RCA Small Wonder digital video camcorder.
“Where in the World is Smokey?” is a challenge designed to allow students, faculty, staff and alumni to share their experiences with the campus community while drawing attention to the Ready for the World initiative. Participants request T-shirts, and then agree to be photographed or videotaped while wearing them on their adventures. The photos and videos are then published on the Ready for the World Web site and used in other campus promotions.
Through the challenge, Smokey has already visited six continents — all but Antarctica — 16 states and the District of Columbia. Photos also have been received of people wearing their “Where in the World is Smokey?” T-shirts while skydiving and scuba diving.
Beets submitted a photo of herself wearing her Smokey shirt at the Biketoberfest at Daytona Beach, Fla., in October 2007.
The “Where in the World is Smokey?” challenge will continue this semester. A drawing will be held to award another video camera to someone who submits a photo or video used on the Web site this semester.

The goal of “Ready for the World: The International and Intercultural Awareness Initiative” is to transform the campus into a culture of diversity that best prepares students for working and competing in the 21st century. The initiative involves increasing the diversity among students, faculty and staff; infusing the curriculum with international and intercultural content; expanding study-abroad and work-study opportunities; and encouraging students to take advantage of all of these opportunities.
