KNOXVILLE — The new Tennessee Governor’s Academy for Mathematics and Science (TGA) will be recruiting rising high school juniors to apply for admission to the school’s inaugural class at 6:00 p.m. on April 13 in Meeting Rooms 1 & 2 of the D.P. Culp University Center at East Tennessee State University.
The TGA is a unique learning opportunity that will allow students to fully immerse themselves in their studies. Students will live on site in Knoxville and have access to the University of Tennessee’s resources.
TGA’s academic calendar will be based on four- to seven-week periods called modules, in which students will focus their attention on a specific question. History and literature will join science and mathematics in helping students answer those fundamental questions. Students will also take Chinese and martial arts to help prepare them for the future.
TGA is designed to give students many hands-on opportunities. Students will have exciting adventures as they visit labs at the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge and perform field work with some of the world’s best researchers.
There is no tuition for students to attend. Applicants must be at least 15 years of age and be a rising high school junior. Applicants must also have been a Tennessee citizen on or before Dec. 1 of their sophomore year, and have completed at least two years of college-preparatory science and math classes.
Students at TGA will live and learn in two 12-person cottages where they will prepare some meals, clean and perform other community tasks as part of their experience. Cottages are located on the campus of the Tennessee School for the Deaf on the banks of the Tennessee River and include double-occupancy rooms with private bathrooms, as well as kitchen, laundry facilities and lounge areas.
Staff at TGA will include four full-time faculty members as well as four full-time doctoral students. In addition, each cottage will have two live-in resident staff members.
TGA recruiter Denise Harvey will lead the Friday night information session. Please note that recruiters do not make final admission decisions for TGA.
An application and further information, including an up-to-date schedule of recruiting events throughout the state can be found on the school’s Web site: http://tga.tennessee.edu.
