KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee’s Zeta Tau Alpha sorority is recruiting faculty, staff and student participants in the Race for the Cure to support the fight against breast cancer. The event– which raises funds for the Knoxville affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation- is set for October 28 at World’s Fair Park.
This year, more than 12,000 people are expected to be involved in the event. As a local platinum sponsor of the event, the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority provides year round support for the race involving the majority of the 150 young women in the organization.
The run/walk begins at 8:30 a.m. The course loops around downtown and can be viewed at www.komenknoxville.org/Race.
A main focus this year will be preparation for and hosting of the more than 600 survivors expected to participate in the day’s event, said Kat Cheshire, philanthropy chair for ZTA. The group serves a special breakfast and provides gifts for each survivor.
The organization is also working to raise funds and register racers and walkers throughout the Knoxville area and will provide overall volunteer support the day of the event.
“We are proud to be involved both from the national level and the local level in this important effort to help find a cure,” Cheshire said. “It’s a very moving and worthwhile event– along with being a lot of fun for people of every age. Our goal is to help recruit a large university contingent to join us that day and to stay involved from year to year.”
A number of local and campus events are scheduled to raise breast cancer awareness, funds and participation in the walk/run:
-Race registration from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 9, 10 and 11 at Starbucks locations in Knoxville.
-Race registration 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 16, 17 and 18 at Panera locations in Knoxville.
Zetas will lead pre-registration for the race at the University Center Plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 16, 17 and 18.
Participate in UT Lady Vols Pink Ribbon Sundays. This new partnership between the Lady Vols and the Komen Knoxville Affiliate honors survivors and promotes breast cancer awareness at sporting events. The first of the three “Pink Ribbon Sunday” events was held Oct. 8 at the Lady Vols volleyball match against SEC rival Georgia. Another is planned for the Lady Vols basketball game against UT-Chattanooga on Nov. 12. All cancer survivors will be admitted free and tickets for their guests are just $5.
