KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee is one of only 28 institutions in the country that serves as both a state university and a land-grant institution. Private giving plays a vital role in the lofty goals set by this dual role.

Fifty-one years ago, a group of civic and business leaders, both alumni and other friends of the university, were selected to be the first members of the UT Development Council. That tradition continues this year and 10 new volunteers have been chosen to assist with UT’s efforts.

Dee Bagwell Haslam will serve as the 2006-07 chair of the group. Haslam is CEO/executive producer of RIVR Media, LP/RVIR Media Interactive.

She is an alumna of UT Knoxville and has served on numerous committees supporting the university including the Chancellor’s Associates, Alliance of Women Philanthropists and the College of Education Board of Visitors. Haslam also is active in the community serving on the board of directors for the United Way, Knoxville Zoo and Emerald Avenue Youth Foundation.

Other newly instated Development Council members include the following:

–E.H. (Buddy) Avery, executive vice president, Taylor & Mathis, Atlanta, Ga.
–Ed F. Bell, president and CEO B&B Enterprises, Knoxville, Tenn.
–H. Russell Johnston, retired professor, Boston University, Knoxville, Tenn.
–Janet McKinley, CCO, BellSouth Corp., Atlanta, Ga.
–Deborah Ingram, physician, Ooltewah, Tenn.
–Jane W. Kline, Lookout Mountain, Tenn.
–William P. Middlemas, retired Bank of America, Amelia Island, Fla.
–Regina P. Murray, Murray Associates, Knoxville, Tenn.
–Larry F. Pratt, First Savings Mortgage Group, McLean, Va.
–Richard L. Rose, attorney, Houston, Texas

The council complements the efforts of the UT Development Office and provides leadership in all aspects of fundraising including personal giving (introductions to potential donors), strategic planning and building networks to broaden UT’s donor base.
