KNOXVILLE — Dr. Joseph Carcello, co-founder and director of research for the University of Tennessee Corporate Governance Center, has been named one of America’s most influential business people by Business Finance magazine.

In an article titled “2006’s Influencers: 60 Authoritative Voices,” Business Finance lists Carcello among the leaders shaping domestic accounting and financial reporting.

Carcello is one of only two academics named to the 2006 list and the only academic named for the past three years. The other academic on the 2006 list is Baruch Lev, professor of accounting and finance at New York University.

“This year-s academic influencers have successfully immersed themselves in the real world of corporate finance and accounting. Joseph Carcello has routinely contributed to critical discussions about finance and accounting regulations and enforcement decision in [his] work with the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board(PCAOB) and the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC),- the article states.

Carcello is the only academic appointed to the prestigious, 31-member PCAOB Standing Advisory Group, which helps establish auditing and professional practice standards for U.S. public companies. He also serves on the Small Business Advisory Task Force for the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations, the body charged with developing standards for assessing the quality of internal control in the U.S., and on the Institute of Internal Auditors- Professional Issues Committee. He previously served as president of the auditing section of the American Accounting Association.

Carcello, the Ernst & Young Professor in the Department of Accounting and Information Management at the University of Tennessee, has published more than 40 articles in academic and professional journals on audit committee performance, financial fraud and audit quality.

Business Finance is written for senior business and finance executives in organizations with annual revenues of at least $100 million. This is the third year the publication has recognized this level of excellence and influence in the business community.
