KNOXVILLE — Eric Brey has been named director of the University of Tennessee’s Thornton Athletic Student Life Center.

He will start July 20.

Brey comes to UT from the University of Wyoming, where he was associate athletic director for academics. He was previously assistant director for academics and eligibility at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Brey takes over for Dr. Ruth Darling, who is leading the new UT Student Success Center. Darling will continue to have oversight responsibilities for both operations.

“I am very pleased that Eric has accepted our offer to direct the Thornton Center,” Darling said. “He has a proven track record of success, and he will be an effective public voice for the academic concerns, responsibilities and rights of UT’s student-athletes.”

Brey received a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a master’s degree in sports administration and sports psychology from the University of Kansas.

Brey is an officer in the United States Naval Reserve. He and his wife Jana have one son, Jacob.

The Thornton Center provides academic support, educational programs, and a learning environment in which student-athletes have the opportunity to achieve their academic and personal goals.

Much progress has been made in these areas over the last few years, Darling said, and Brey will continue that process of improvement.

Darling said the new Student Success Center will provide a single source of support to help students identify university programs and services and access them in a way that meets their academic and personal goals. The center will open to students at the beginning of fall semester.
