KNOXVILLE — John M. McRae has been named dean of the University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design.

McRae comes to the university from the American Institute of Architects where he has worked as senior director of grants and development, a position to which he was appointed in October of 2003. He will begin at UT on August 1.
He brings extensive experience, having served as dean of the School of Architecture at Mississippi State University for 14 years and on the faculty and in administrative positions at the University of Florida-s College of Architecture for 20 years.
“John McRae’s administrative experience and recent role with the American Institute of Architects is not only impressive, but makes him a well-qualified leader for the college,- said Chancellor Loren Crabtree. -He will bring a wealth of experience and a broad perspective to the college.-
Prior to his employment with AIA, McRae was vice president of education and training with RTKL Associates Inc., an international architecture, engineering and planning firm. He also served as president of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture from 1997 to 1998, and was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1995.
McRae received a master’s degree in architecture from Rice University in 1967 and a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Texas at Austin in 1966.
The UT Knoxville College of Architecture and Design was founded in 1965 and is housed in the award-winning Art and Architecture Building. The college-s architecture and interior design programs are among the only such professionally accredited architecture programs in the state.
“I am very excited, along with my wife, Sharon, to be coming to the University of Tennessee and to serve in the College,” said McRae. “I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the life of the college and to work with professionals across the state.”
