KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee Programs Abroad Office offers many travel and learning opportunities for students.

“Any student can participate in a study abroad program after their freshman year,” said Monica Christen, interim assistant director for the Programs Abroad Office. “While speaking a foreign language is helpful, it is not a requirement.”

Trips can be arranged to any place in the world, Christen said. Time spent abroad can last as long as a year or as little as a week.

Information sessions are held at the Programs Abroad Office every day that classes meet Monday through Friday at 2 p.m. for students seeking to learn more about study abroad opportunities.

“Students who have graduated often tell me that studying abroad was the best experience of their college career,” Christen said. “There are also those who tell me that deciding not to study abroad is the decision they most regret.”

In addition to studying abroad, students may also participate in internships, work abroad programs, volunteer programs, or teaching programs.

“It’s a growth experience. After traveling abroad, students often return with a more mature outlook and a stronger focus on their interests and future careers,” Christen said.
