KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee has named Dr. Robert A. Rider as the new dean of the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences.

Rider is currently dean of the College of Education at Butler University in Indianapolis. He previously served as associate dean for research and graduate studies in the College of Education at Florida State University.

He joined Florida State as an assistant professor in 1979, served as co-chair of the Department of Movement Science and Physical Education, and was director of the Center for the Study of Teaching and Learning.

He received a doctorate degree in education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he also earned a master of arts in teaching degree in health and physical education.

He holds a bachelor of science degree in physical education from the State University of New York.

“Dr. Rider has an extensive, on-going record of teaching, scholarship and service and is well-prepared to assume the dean’s position,” Chancellor Loren Crabtree said.

Rider will begin the appointment in early July.

He will replace Dr. John Koontz who has served as interim dean for two years.

“John has helped bring the College to the place where it can now move into a position of prominence,” Crabtree said. “He is a skilled administrator and an outstanding university citizen.”

“I would also like to thank the search committee and Associate Dean Sarah Gardial for their service in identifying candidates for the position,” Crabtree said.
