“Dr. William E. Evans, scientific director of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and one of 12 individuals under consideration for president of the University of Tennessee, informed me today that he is removing his name from further consideration,” presidential search executive director Dr. Margaret Perry said Monday.

“During our conversation, Dr. Evans said his own research related to childhood leukemia and ongoing plans for new scientific programs at St. Jude were among the major reasons underlying his decision.

“Those of us involved in the search appreciate his interest in the university, and we look forward to his continuing contributions to the partnership between St. Jude and the UT Health Science Center.

“We still have a very strong pool of candidates and look forward to the interviews that begin on Tuesday.”
