KNOXVILLE–University of Tennessee campuses currently are not barring enrollment of students from Asian countries affected by the SARS outbreak.

Steve Leonard, UT executive vice president, said UT is urging caution for students and faculty who are considering international travel, but information from the Centers for Disease Control does not warrant a suspension of enrollment.

“At this time, the CDC does not recommend canceling or postponing classes, meetings or other gatherings that will include persons traveling to the United States from areas with SARS,” Leonard said. “We will continually monitor the center’s advisories and make changes if necessary.”

On Wednesday, the UT Health Science Center in Memphis said it would not accept students from countries with large numbers of SARS cases. Later Wednesday, CDC issued its new recommendations.

Current advisories and other information about SARS are available from the CDC Website, http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars/
