KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee has announced approval for federal funding to create a new Center for Homeland Security.
Proposed by UT’s Institute for Public Service, the new center was established by $1 million secured in Congress with help from U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn. It seeks to deliver technically-oriented training courses required by first responders; conduct assessments and analysis of potential threats; assist state and local first responder organizations and agencies; and provide academic and practical expertise on homeland security and first responder issues.
Working to develop and deliver center programs will be IPS’ Law Enforcement Innovation Center, which has developed and delivered training to more than 5,500 law enforcement and community members, and Center for Industrial Services, which has provided emergency response training since 1992.
