KNOXVILLE – Tighter security procedures will be in effect for sporting events, concerts and other entertainment activities at Thompson-Boling arena.
Philip Scheurer, University of Tennessee vice president for operations, said Thursday that a security plan for the arena was implemented after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Last week’s heightened terrorist alert prompted UT officials to review the plan.
“Our security measures at the arena have worked well,” Scheurer said. “We have attempted to provide a safe and secure environment with minimal impact on fans and arena guests.
“Starting with last weekend’s men’s basketball game, our activities became more visible, and they will remain so for the foreseeable future. Fans should plan to arrive earlier.
Scheurer said arena gates will open at 3:30 p.m. Saturday for the Florida game, which starts at 5 p.m. Gates have usually opened an hour before tip off.
Opening times for future men’s games will be announced a few days prior to each game. The gates will continue to open one hour before tip off at all Lady Vols games.
Large bags, backpacks and other large parcels are prohibited in Thompson-Boling arena. Headset radios, cell phones, pagers and diaper bags accompanying an infant are permitted. Items not allowed inside the arena cannot be left at the gates or in the concourse.
All items are subject to search or inspection and metal scanners may be used, Scheurer said.
