KNOXVILLE – The University of Tennessee will host an exhibition of stepping, a dance style rooted in African cultures and traditions, at the Carolyn P. Brown Memorial University Center auditorium 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 17, 2002.

“Step Afrika!” is a group of performers trained in percussive dancing and theater. The Washington D.C.-based group is an extension of the Soweto Dance Company of South Africa.

The group will recount the history of stepping, from its origins in African cultural dance traditions to its modern popularization by African-American fraternities and sororities.

UT’s Black Cultural Programming Committee (BCPC) is sponsoring the event, which is free of charge and open to the public.
