KNOXVILLE — Dr. Peter J. Alfonso has been named the University of Tennessee’s associate vice president for research, it was announced Friday.
Alfonso, associate provost for research at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro since December 1999, will assume his UT post in April.
“Peter Alfonso is a valuable asset in UT’s drive toward national status as a top-tier research university,” said Dr. Dwayne McCay, vice president for research and information technology.
UNCG grant totals increased 39 percent and research expenditures rose 16 percent during Alfonso’s tenure.
At UT, he will oversee research activities at the Knoxville and Memphis campuses as well as the Institute of Agriculture and the UT Space Institute, McCay said.
Alfonso also will continue his research in speech physiology at UT as a professor in the College of Arts and Sciences’ department of audiology and speech pathology.
Before joining UNCG, Alfonso headed the department of speech and hearing science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He currently is a fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
In 1997-98, he was an American Council on Education Fellow at Indiana University, and in 1990-91 he was a Fulbright Research Scholar to the Netherlands.
