KNOXVILLE — Dr. Bill Madia, director of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will speak at the University of Tennessee’s fall commencement Dec. 16.

The ceremony is set for 10 a.m. in Thompson-Boling Assembly Center and Arena.

Madia became ORNL director in April when UT and Battelle Memorial Institute assumed management responsibilities for the U.S. Department of Energy facility. He also serves as chief executive officer of UT-Battelle.

Before coming to Oak Ridge, Madia was director of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash. He previously was president of Battelle Technology International.

He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate in chemistry from Virginia Tech.
