Knoxville — The University of Tennessee begins its football season September 2, hosting Southern Mississippi University at Neyland Stadium.

And UT traffic officials have again mapped out their strategy for getting people to the game and home again as quickly as possible.

The director of the UT Transportation Center said one way to make the trip more quickly is to avoid using the interstate system.

“This year, there’s more construction on the interstate, particularly the interchange of I-40 and Alcoa Highway,” said Dr. Steve Richards. “We’re encouraging people who live in Knox County to find alternate routes to downtown.”

Traffic officials are also encouraging motorists to use Knoxville Area Transit’s shuttle service from the Civic Coliseum parking garage and the Old City.

Kickoff for the Tennessee-Southern Mississippi game is 7:30 p.m.
